IIM BANGALORE

The Measure Drawing

What began with measuring the walls of IIM Bangalore soon unfolded into an understanding of its deep architectural order. Each measurement revealed how Doshi and his team used proportion, geometry, and rhythm to shape space, decisions of scale, light, and alignment that defined the experience of IIM Bangalore and became the starting point of my larger exploration.

MEASURE DRAWING

The process of documenting IIM Bangalore was an intense month-and-a-half journey that unfolded through countless process sketches. Each drawing deepened my understanding of proportion, rhythm, and scale, revealing how Doshi’s architecture thrives on precision and human measure.

Every step, measuring, drafting, revising, and rechecking, became an act of discovery. As lines began to connect, axes emerged, and geometric relationships unfolded, I realized the incredible intentionality behind each junction and wall. The plan slowly revealed itself as a living system of order and adaptation.

When world-renowned architect Peter Zumthor visited Bangalore, this updated plan, integrating Ar. Sanjay Mohe’s later additions, became the central exhibit. The most striking moment came when we compared all of Zumthor’s built works, drawn at the same scale as IIM Bangalore; the reaction was one of awe at the sheer expanse and complexity of IIMB’s design.

This entire process was made possible through the mentorship of Ar. Bijoy Ramachandran and the guidance of the team at Hundredhands. Their support shaped not just the drawing, but the foundation of my later dissertation and thesis, rooting my architectural inquiry in precision, respect, and reflection.
